Settlement & Community Support

Moving to a new country brings new opportunities, but it can also mean navigating unfamiliar systems, services and responsibilities. At Afghan Turkic Community in Australia, we aim to make that transition a little easier by providing a welcoming and familiar first point of contact for newly arrived Uzbek and Turkmen individuals and families from Afghanistan.
Since establishing our community, we have supported more than 50 families as they begin building their lives in Australia. From finding a place to live to understanding local services, our support is practical, culturally responsive and shaped around the needs of each family.
We support community members with:
-
Housing and rental assistance: helping families search for suitable rental properties, understand applications and navigate the process of securing a home.
-
Accessing essential services: connecting people with government, health, education, legal and other community services.
-
Language and interpreting support: helping community members understand information and communicate when navigating everyday services, while connecting them with professional interpreters when required.
-
Employment pathways: assisting people to understand the Australian employment system, prepare for work and connect with employment and training opportunities.
-
Education support: helping families navigate schools, further education, vocational training and other learning opportunities.
-
Everyday settlement guidance: helping newly arrived families understand unfamiliar processes and find the right information, services and support.
-
Referrals and connections: connecting community members with specialised organisations and professional services when additional assistance is needed.
-
Community connection: welcoming new families into the community and creating opportunities to meet others, participate in activities and build friendships and support networks.
Sometimes the most important support for a newly arrived person is simply knowing where to start and having someone they can turn to. We want every person who comes through our community to feel welcomed, understood and supported as they find their feet in Australia.
Our goal is to help people move from arrival to connection, independence and belonging, while building the confidence and opportunities they need to create their own future in Australia.
Women & Youth Empowerment
Creating opportunities to participate, grow and lead.
Women and young people are at the heart of strong and connected communities. We create opportunities for Afghan Uzbek and Turkmen women and youth to develop their skills, build confidence, form meaningful connections and participate more actively in their communities and wider Australian society.
For women, our programs focus on reducing barriers to participation and creating welcoming spaces where they can learn, connect and become more independent. This includes English and literacy programs, education and employment support, practical workshops, social activities and opportunities for community involvement. We particularly aim to reach women who may experience language barriers, social isolation or limited access to learning and community activities.
For young people, we focus on education, leadership, personal development and community participation. Through mentoring, workshops, volunteering and community initiatives, young people are encouraged to develop their strengths, explore future pathways and take an active role in shaping their community.
We also create opportunities for women and young people to have their ideas and voices represented in the programs and activities that affect them. Rather than simply participating, we want them to feel confident taking initiative, contributing their perspectives and becoming future community leaders.
By investing in women and young people, we are investing in a community that is more connected, inclusive and confident about its future.
Culture, Language & Belonging

Creating opportunities to participate, grow and lead.
Keeping our heritage alive while building a strong sense of belonging in Australia.
Language and culture are an important part of who we are and how we stay connected across generations. We create opportunities for Afghan Uzbek and Turkmen families to celebrate their heritage, maintain their languages and traditions, and share their culture with the wider Australian community.
Through cultural celebrations, language programs, community gatherings, traditional arts, music, storytelling and intergenerational activities, we bring people together and create spaces where culture can be experienced, shared and passed on to younger generations.
For children and young people growing up in Australia, staying connected to their heritage can strengthen their sense of identity and help them understand the stories, traditions and languages of their families. At the same time, our activities encourage connection with other communities and active participation in Australia's diverse multicultural society.
We also use cultural events as an opportunity to introduce Uzbek and Turkmen heritage from Afghanistan to the broader Australian community, creating greater understanding, visibility and connection.
Our aim is to build a community where people can be proud of where they come from, confident in where they are, and connected to both their heritage and their home in Australia.
